Barbara Yocum, 86, of the Gables of Monrovia, is an avid Nascar fan to say the least. On any given race day, you can find Barbara glued to the television set watching her favorite Nascar stars. In particular, Barbara is a fan of racing superstar Jeff Gordon. Her Wish of a Lifetime was to meet Jeff Gordon in person, and attend one of his many races.
Barbara first became passionate about Nascar when her husband introduced her to the sport over 15 years ago. Since that day, she has never missed one of Jeff Gordon’s races and loves to cheer him on. Unfortunately, her husband passed away 9 years ago, but she still maintains her love of racing in his honor and memory. Barbara loves Jeff Gordon so much that she collects his memorabilia--pictures, flags, autographs, and even a toothbrush! Due to some health issues, lack of resources, and financial problems, Barbara has never been able to secure a meet-and-greet with her racing hero. Though she has been to Nascar races in the past, her dream of meeting Jeff Gordon still remains.
Wish of a Lifetime and Brookdale have made Barbara’s Wish of meeting Jeff Gordon come true. Barbara and her son Shawn attended the Speedway Day LA Press Conference at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on March 5, 2014. Thanks to the generosity of the Auto Club Speedway, Barbara was introduced to Jeff Gordon, recieved a signed autograph, and most importantly, she can finally put her dream of meeting her racing hero to rest!
In 2010, Brookdale and Wish of a Lifetime formed a partnership to provide a helping hand in making some of the dreams of Brookdale’s residents come true. To request a wish, residents fill out a wish application explaining an experience they would like to have fulfilled. Residents at Brookdale communities nationwide are invited to share and submit their wishes at www.seniorwish.org. The fulfillment of wishes aligns with Brookdale’s Optimum Life® platform, which cultivates whole-person wellness through six key dimensions: purposeful, emotional, physical, social, spiritual and intellectual. Since the partnership’s inception, more than 250 Brookdale seniors have had their wish granted.
Wish of a Lifetime™ fosters respect and appreciation for deserving seniors by fulfilling their life-enriching Wishes. Founded by twotime Olympic skier, World Cup gold medalist, entrepreneur, and former NFL football player Jeremy Bloom in 2008 in living honor of his grandmother, Wish of a Lifetime encourages the public to take an active role in granting Wishes through its Wish Connect program. Wish of a Lifetime has made 800 wishes come true for seniors in 49 states and the District of Columbia. 93 percent of wish recipients stated they felt their quality of life improved after having their wish granted and 76 percent said they felt their overall health improved after experiencing a Wish.
